One of the goals of Topanga Animal Rescue is to increase children's awareness of the animals of planet Earth and to instill a strong sense of empathy towards them. These classes are interactive with live animals such as: rabbits, chickens, pigs, hamsters, dogs, cats and ferrets. Children learn about each specific species and their place in the animal kingdom as well as the environment in which they live. Children are instructed on how to behave around animals as well as how to care for them. Children are also taught about wild species and our need to respect them and live together on this planet.
Instructor Details:
Susan Clark, critical care veterinary nurse, has devoted her considerable energy and talents to a wide variety of animal causes and endeavors in her community of Topanga, California, USA. She became directly involved in animal rescue volunteering with Wildlife Emergency Response for two years. Realizing that Topanga had need for a local small animal rescue operation, in 1994 she created Topanga Animal Rescue(TAR), responding via her hotline to local situations, triaging and transporting animals to local emergencies and animal hospitals. TAR gradually expanded to include wild birds, transporting them to the appropriate rehabilitators or veterinarians. The organization has developed a core group of experienced TAR members who help Susan to handle the ever increasing work load. Susan actively works to spread the message that animal neutering is a necessity and a responsibility. She writes a column for the Topanga Messenger entitled, 'Tails of Topanga,' drawing on her TAR rescue experiences to inform the community about TAR's activities and educate about animal issues such as neutering and the perils of wildlife-pet interactions. Recognizing her valuable experience, Susan was asked by TCEP to head the small animal team for the Topanga Coalition for Emergency Preparedness. She has held that position for over five years and was recently also appointed to the LA County Disaster Preparedness Committee for the County Board of Supervisors. Both this Committee and TCEP have received national attention for their efforts to better prepare local communities for emergencies.
